Important Deck Maintenance Tips for Summer

Having a clean and well-maintained deck is a great feeling; proper deck maintenance will help you get the most out of your deck this summer (and will help your deck’s longevity, too!). Inspect the Boards

This summer, it’s a good idea to do a thorough inspection of your deck.

  • Examine the boards and look for any signs of rot and decay, loose nails or wood, splintering wood, & cracks in the board surface. These are all signs that need to be addressed as soon as possible.

  • Check for wear on your deck's surface to help you determine what types of materials may be needed to repair certain areas.

  • Inspecting warping is also important because it could mean there’s an underlying problem with pressure applied against certain areas. For example, uneven weight distribution over time can lead up towards a breaking point during rainy seasons.

  • If you notice any of your boards are rotting or decaying, it’s important to get them repaired promptly to avoid further damage and prevent any accidents that could happen due to rotten wood.

Consider Staining or Painting your Wood Deck

Staining or painting your wood deck are two great ways to refresh your deck for summer. Staining involves applying a new coat of stain over top of the existing one, while painting adds a whole new layer of color that can change the look of your deck in dramatic ways. If you're looking to keep things simple and natural, consider refinishing by staining. It's typically an easier process than painting because there's less prep work involved. If you'd like to change up the color scheme entirely (maybe paint it red instead of blue), this is also an option; just be sure that whatever stain or paint you use is compatible with your decking material so that there aren't any issues after application.

Reevaluate Your Deck

Take the time to reevaluate your deck’s condition and make repairs or replacements as needed. Check the deck's age and condition, safety, strength and stability, appearance and aesthetics, functionality and comfort. This can often be easily done by homeowners; also consider that YouTube can be a great resource for determining if you have damage and what you can do about it to make repairs. It’s always a good idea to err on the side of caution and contact your local decking contractors to determine if your deck requires repairs; professionals can often spot problems before they become major and start to impact your deck, so it’s a good idea to be proactive and contact the pros to evaluate your deck.
